How do thoughts affect the physical body?


Our philosophy on getting to the root of pain ... calming the body will bring you half way to taking control of your nervous system. Stilling the mind will take you the rest of the way...You need to learn how to take control of your racing mind.

Every thought we have creates not only a chemical change in the brain but also an electrical change in our nervous system. The nervous system controls everything in the body. It is crucial to bring the nervous system into balance in order to begin lowering the pain and stress levels. When you trigger the nervous system with negative or stressful thinking you increase the pain. Releasing negative thought patterns that trigger the nervous system will lower pain levels.

The mind says “It shouldn’t be this way!” and “It’s not fair!” Pain is a hard reality to accept. People in physical pain often become very depressed. That depressive thinking, the resistance to what is, begins to cause what I call “suffering”. I see pain and suffering as two separate things.

Pain is a purely physical sensation and is sometimes unavoidable. Suffering, on the other hand, is optional. Suffering is what our mind does in reaction to the pain. Our mind is resistant to the fact that we have many losses as a result of the pain. We might not be able to play with our children anymore. The pleasure of sexual contact can be taken away. We might become socially isolated because we can’t go out and do things. We experience the loss of many activities that once brought joy into our lives. The losses go on and on….

Here is where we have a choice. We can choose to react to the pain, and to the losses, or respond to it. Our tendency is to react and to feel victimized. If we are ready to respond to our reality we can take control. When we begin to take responsibility, or to “respond with ability”, we can change what is happening within our body. We, at Naturally Pain Free can facilitate this exciting journey.

The suffering that we create in our minds, as a reaction to what has happened to our body, is detrimental physically, mentally and emotionally. This, again, is due to our thoughts and beliefs. We can choose to take control of our thoughts and beliefs. Think of the mind being like a computer. You have the power to do the programming. You can chose to program with thoughts that promote healing and eliminate or reduce pain… or you can run a program that will exacerbate the pain. It is all up to you.

Calming the body is the other half of becoming pain free. It is hard to separate it from stilling, and bringing peace to, the mind. I like to call it the body-mind. They are inseparable. They affect each other. If you deeply relax the body it will bring peace to the mind…and vice versa.
